no fins, no nothing (skimming)

Skimming.
If you've ever thought of this as a gentle, r and r sport?
THINK.
AGAIN.
I mean, seriously.
I'm not lying when I say that this sport is for the hardcore. The hardcore who don't mind bruises- everywhere, everyday. All the time.

Cuts,
scrapes,
busted knees,
torn up feet.

That's skimming.

In fact, the dude who sold me my board told me that he knew a kid who lost a few toes to his board. Not even kidding. Like, that actually happened. His board cut his toes off.

Here's a glimpse:

That? Is the sport.
And that? Is what I've been learning to do.

And this, I swear is the hardest sport I have ever tried. And that's saying quite a bit, because I figure skate. (
I've heard it's harder than surfing- and I believe it. No fins, no nothing. You're totally out there on your own. It's like skate boarding in the water.
But once you 'get it'? It rocks like crazy.

Doesn't look like a whole lot, right? Exactly. And it took me a whole week to get to that point. After 165411 falls and total wipe-outs and sand eating. But, what can I say? It's still incredibly awesome. It's so fast.

I have an Apex, but I've heard a lot of good things about Exile, Zap and Victoria (and Freak, too, I want to say..?). I almost went with a Victoria, but I just fell in love with the bright orange-y-ness of my Apex. And it's a seriously sweet ride, I'd totally recommend it.

So all and all? It was a really great way to spend vacation- especially when you're on the west coast of Florida. That's like, the skim capital of the universe. (And it's the Atlantic lake out there. No surf.)

All this to say, I'm glad I did it.
And, yes. It was worth the pain.
Ha.

  1. That looks really hard. Well, to me any form of surfing is really hard. I swim like Fezzic in the Princess Bride. (I only dog-paddle!) Yeah. :) Good luck and may the busted knees avoid you!
